Flax Art store could get axed to make room for housing

The site of the iconic Flax Art & Design store at 1699 Market St. in San Francisco could be demolished to make room for 160 units of housing, joining a handful of other Mid-Market sites going from commercial to residential.

The owner of the building, Jim Nuss of Hermco Inc., filed a preliminary project assessment with the San Francisco Planning Department that calls for a nine-story residential building with 4,500 square feet of retail and 120 parking spaces.
